Maryborough Park ideal venue for award winning 2008 Relay for Life
Maryborough’s first ever Relay for Life held in July 2008 at Maryborough Park was announced Event of the Year in Maryborough’s 2009 Australia Day Awards.
The Relay for Life is a weekend-long event in which teams are sponsored to run or walk laps of a route for 24 hours to raise money for the Cancer Council. The event includes a candlelit ceremony during which participants pay tribute to friends and relatives lost to the disease. Cancer survivors are also honoured during the ceremonies.
Committee Chairman Councillor Barbara Hovard said she was delighted with the win and it was a fitting tribute not only for the organising committee that had worked so hard to make it a success, but particularly for the 58 teams that participated.
“As it was our inaugural event, we didn’t expect many teams to register, but Maryborough came through with a massive 700 people joining in to raise $52,000,” she said. “The weather was cold and wet yet the atmosphere was warm, friendly and determined so this award is for all those wonderful people who put up with difficult conditions to raise this huge amount of money for such a great cause.”
Maryborough Park proved to be the ideal venue, providing plenty of space in the main oval for all the teams, support people and equipment. Cr Hovard said the 2009 event on 9 and 10 May would also be held at Maryborough Park. “We can’t go past Maryborough Park. It has all the facilities we could need for the number of people we expect and plenty of room for expansion which we will need this year because we are aiming to double the number of teams entered,” she said. Facilities available to groups at Maryborough Park include amenities blocks, electricity, lighting, sealed access roads and undercover facilities.
